Los derechos de explotación eran transferibles a la muerte del propietario del terreno si había algún tipo de parentesco, incluso lejano o circunstancial. Así que muchos Osage murieron anticipadamente para que unos HdP se apropiasen de ese derecho de explotación. Los crímenes no se persiguieron adecuadamente aunque el gobierno acabó prohibiendo esa transferencia de derechos salvo a familia directa, pero ya era tarde.
